Thirsty Mag - May 2019

National Wine Day is May 25, as if vino really needs its own holiday to be celebrated. The purpose of this day is very simple. It’s a day to buy wine, appreciate wine and enjoy the history of wine. After all, this alcoholic beverage has been a part of human civilization for at least 8,000 years. This year, celebrate the day at one of these six spots is Los Angeles.

The Blending Lab

Want to create a vino that is as one-of-a-kind as you are? Over at The Blending Lab, you can create your own wine blend as you learn what makes each grape unique and package it in a bottle to take home for yourself. If you aren’t feeling crafty, just sit back and sip a number of the delicious local wines via their famous tasting flight. While they encourage their #wingelenos to indulge, they also reward smarts: show them you are being safe and not drinking and driving with an Uber or Lyft receipt and receive 10% off.

What kind of Vinovore are you? A Bronze T Rex? A Purple Ape? A Pink Pony? Head to Vinovore in DTLA and discover your wine spirit animal.  After previously opening DTLA staples The Must and Perch, Den Haan wanted to switch her focus to retail. As a certified sommelier and female in a male-dominated industry, Den Haan made it her mission to showcase other women in the world of wine. Her first wine shop sells female-made wine from around the world and features vintners like Amy Atwood, Arianna Occhipinti, and Cristina Geminiani, among others. On National Wine Day, Vinovore is offering 10% off magnums, 15% off mixed six packs of rosé and select bottles for $10.

LA Wine

David DeLuca, owner of beloved DTLA haunt Ham & Eggs, returned to his first love of viticulture with the opening of Chinatown’s LA WINE, a true paean to the great wines of California and the farmers who produce them. The bar opened in August 2018 in the soon-to-be thriving Blossom Plaza, steps from Chinatown’s Gold Line Metro Station. The stunningly designed bar, by the acclaimed Patrick Bernatz, is a timeless homage to Sonoma’s Glen Ellen village, incorporating all-natural materials and preserved wood to encapsulate the essence of wine country. For National Wine Day, the bar will offer happy hour prices ($8) rosé and seasonal reds all day.

Mirabelle Wine Bar

Nestled in the San Fernando Valley, Mirabelle Wine Bar is the brainchild of vino vets David Gibbs and Nick Caballero (former Augustine Wine Bar manager). The new Valley Village spot boasts a low key, dim setting adorned with deep blue booths. In addition to craft beer, on the menu you’ll find close to 100 wines ranging from easy and approachable to complex and rare. Take advantage of the daily happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. where select wines are $10, tap wines are $6 and all beers are $5. While you are there, nibble on bites including Fingerling Potatoes, Spanish Octopus and Pan Con Tomate.

Rosenthal - The Malibu Wine Estate

Just steps from the beach, visitors can enjoy Malibu grown wines at Rosenthal Wine Estate. The Rosenthal wines are derived from grapes grown in a scenic valley four miles inland, 1,400 feet above the coastal fog in the AVA Malibu Newton Canyon. Varietals grown on the estate include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Chardonnay. At harvest they are picked by hand, then aged in the finest French Oak barrels. Back at the beachside tasting room, you’ll find a casual atmosphere complete with an exquisite garden patio with ocean views. In addition to wine sampling, sipping and shopping, Rosenthal hosts live music every weekend.
