This Pocket of Silver Lake Has Lots of Cool Small Businesses to Browse

Next time you put your name on the wait list at Sqirl, instead of pacing on the crowded sidewalk, head one block east to Hoover Street. Among mechanic shops and storefront churches are a few retail gems worth the jaunt. Technically it’s still Silver Lake, but the vibe is more artsy, less hipster.

Old Style Guitar Shop

You definitely feel like you’ve wandered back in time when you step into the Old Style Guitar Shop. Truly eclectic electric guitars hang or sit next to artful nylon string acoustics, and you’ll also find a selection of vintage dulcimers and zithers. Owner Reuben Cox and his team handle extensive repairs, but they do simple restring jobs, too.

 

Recollection

Los Angeles has no shortage of vintage clothing stores. But finding ones that aren’t heavily picked over is the challenge. Recollection is jam-packed with affordable finds from across the decades (’50s party dresses, ’70s jumpsuits) in great condition—most for less than $50. The shop also boasts an impressive selection of used records.

 

Bar Keeper

For more than a decade, Bar Keeper was a fixture in Sunset Junction. But last year owner Joe Keeper moved (after his former landlord doubled his rent) to this off-the-beaten path location. The new space is nearly double the size of the shop’s former home, and it offers even more of the quirky vintage bar accessories (tiki glasses) and hard-to-find cocktail mixers that neighbors have always flocked here for.

 

Vinovore

Vinovore is a wine seller specializing in female winemakers. Owned and operated by Perch cofounder (and certified sommelier) Coly Den Haan, the well-stocked store holds wine tastings on the regular. Pop in to pick out a bottle for dinner or customize a wine-centric gift box for a loved one.

 

Makers Mess

From sip-and-paint nights to macramé-wall-hanging classes, Makers Mess holds adult workshops where you can learn a skill, meet new friends, or hang with besties. Want to host a private event? For $500 you get the space for two hours, plus an instructor and all the supplies.
